Ranbir and I don't gossip

Deepika Padukone is the covergirl of the July issue of Vogue India. She reveals lesser-known facts about herself in the mag.

Like how she starts her day with what she calls "a maaaajor breakfast". "I think it's a very South Indian thing. I can't start my day without breakfast.

This 'something' can range from idlis, dosas and upma, to sausages, baked beans on toast and even potato toasties."s Deepika isn't counting calories or carbs yet.

When she's not working, she does an hour of yoga before breakfast. Deepika doesn't carry food from home, so lunch is usually whatever the unit serves.

"Ranbir asks me how I cannot tell good food from bad. I can, but for me, it doesn't become an issue."

About spending time with Ranbir she says, "We do our own thing because tomorrow, I don't want to sit and say, 'I should have done this but I didn't.'

Salman Khan's pet dog Myjaan in critical condition

Everyone knows how much Salman Khan loves his pets. After Myson's death earlier this year, Salman Khan's other pet dog Myjaan took seriously ill last Sunday. Myjaan's condition became so bad that Salman's vet advised him to take her to the SPCA Hospital in Parel.

Salman drove down with Myjaan to the hospital as late as 10.30 pm. But the dog's condition was so critical that the hospital doctors advised him to admit his pet immediately.

Impressed and appalled

Says a source, "Salman was impressed with the staff and their work but was disappointed at the appalling conditions of the dog ward. The facilities were not very clean as well. Salman requested for a separate room for Myjaan and asked his keeper to stay back to look after her."

But Salman didn't leave the matter there. Adds the source, "He promised Lt Col (Dr) J C Khanna, the SPCA secretary who took him around the hospital that he would help repair and renovate the dog ward. The repair of a ward costs crores but that didn't faze Salman."

In recovery

Lt Col (Dr) J C Khanna confirms, "It's true that Salman Khan's dog Myjaan was admitted by the actor on Sunday night. He adores Myjaan and was extremely anxious about her. The next day, when he returned in the morning, he went through the wards. This was his first visit to SPCA and he was quite happy with the facilities. Myjaan is still undergoing treatment. When she was admitted, she was seriously sick and was given a separate room.

Initially, Salman visited for the first couple of days but now his caretakers are here. His pet was very critical when brought in. Her blood count was low earlier but she's recovering now."

Promise kept?

Did Salman promise to renovate the dog ward? Says Khanna, "Salman might have casually mentioned about doing something for the dog ward but then lots of people say they will do this and that and finally are not able to for various reasons, so I can't really say what he promised. Though we have excellent equipment, funds are always required, as the wards need to be repaired. Like the Mumbai Gaurakshak Trust has renovated the cattle ward while somebody else has repaired the cat ward. Now the dog wards need to be repaired."

As far as giving a special room for Salman's pet dog is concerned, Dr Khanna says, "One of the rooms which is the cardiac center is lying vacant as the ECG is not working. So, if someone wants a special room for his/her pet or to stay the whole day and night, we give that room."

Deepika leaves Kareena out of Love Aaj Kal special screening

Deepika Padukone will have a trial of her upcoming film. She plans to invite her boyfriend, parents, close friends and "all the wonderful people" in her life. Guess who isn'tone of them...

Deepika Padukone is planning to hold a special trial of her film Love Aaj Kal. Guess who isn't on the guest list? LAK producer, Saif Ali Khan's girlfriend, Kareena Kapoor.

Director Imtiaz Ali wanted Dippy for the film, while producer Saif later confessed he regretted not having Bebo in the film.

A special film

Deepika says, "Love Aaj Kal is a special film. And I'm planning to have a special screening for all the special people in my life my family, my boyfriend, my four best friends Sneha, Divya, Hiteshi and Srila from Bangalore, Farah Khan (her first film Om Shanti Om's director) Shah Rukh (her first producer and co-star) and others who made my journey in life and career unforgettable for me. I want to show this film to all the wonderful people in my life." While it's obvious her producer and co-star in Love Aaj Kal Saif Ali Khan will be part of the trial, his girlfriend Kareena won't be invited.

The actress recalls one scene that she loves from the film. "It was at a typical Punjabi dhaba in Delhi. I was supposed to get drunk and get up on a table and dance. I was to lose my balance and fall, and Saif was supposed to grab me and break my fall. But he misjudged where I was going to fall, I lost my step and almost fell on the ground flat on my face! Fortunately, Saif managed to grab the end of my kurta and I didn't hurt myself badly. It was a difficult scene, because I don't drink at all so I had to imagine how it is to really get drunk!"

Is Bollywood too late on 9/11 movies?

Hollywood has highlighted it, so have others. But the Hindi film industry has barely touched upon 9/11 as a theme, with Kabir Khan's New York coming eight years after the tragic incident in the US.

Experts say it is too late to make a film on the subject even as the film is set to be released on Friday.

"New York is belated...it has been nearly eight years since the incident happened. The Mumbai film industry is very late in reacting to this kind of a storyline...The topicality of such a theme is lost because of the delay," film historian Gautam Kaul said.

Film critic Omar Qureshi said the same.

"India is a little late on this. Hollywood (the US) and other countries have already made movies on 9/11. Indian filmmakers did pass a thought that they should do it but did not because it was too sensitive for them to handle," he said.

"Everyone here got a shock after the 26/11 attacks and it triggered reactions. Everything became very sensitive then on, which is exactly what happened to the world after 9/11 and they (Indian filmmakers) realised that this is one story to be told," he added.

Starring John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan, New York can be called Bollywood's rare full-fledged attempt at dealing with the subject.

Hollywood has kept drawing references from the tragedy and showcased it in documentaries and feature films like Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004), Inside 9/11 (2005), World Trade Center (2006), United 93 (2006) and Reign Over Me (2007), to name a few.

In 2004, US-based Indian filmmaker Haider Bilgrami made Bandhak, about a professional who is killed by a racist following the World Trade Center attack. His brother Baldev, in a frenzy of revenge, takes a white man hostage.

In 2007, Pakistani director Shoaib Mansoor made a mark on the global scene with his first feature film Khuda Kay Liye, which was based on the same subject.

In the same year, veteran Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah touched upon the subject in his directorial debut Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota but his story revolved around a group of people from India on board the flights that crashed into the World Trade Center.

It was followed up by Vishesh Films' Dhokha, about a Muslim protagonist whose relationship comes to a grinding halt courtesy the repercussions of the attacks.

Both films were box office duds. Well-known filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt feels Dhokha failed because it had new faces.

"Dhokha had 9/11 as a background but it did not do well because it had new people... and now that a commercial film (New York) has come after eight years with an A-list star cast, everyone is noticing the theme," said Bhatt over telephone from Mumbai.

Commenting on the lack of Bollywood films on the theme, Bhatt said: "The images of the twin towers being attacked by the planes have kind of become the defining images of the 21st century but Indian filmmakers don't deal with social realities.

"They like to lock themselves up only in light matters like that of the heart. A matter of political turmoil is not a Bollywood filmmakers' cup of tea," he said.

Apart from New York, Karan Johar's upcoming My Name Is Khan is also on the same subject.

The film is about a Muslim (Shah Rukh Khan) who suffers from Asperger syndrome, a form of autism which impacts social interaction abilities and he is arrested as a suspected terrorist in post-9/11 Los Angeles after the authorities mistake his disability for suspicious behaviour.

Also starring Kajol, the film is scheduled for 2010 release, almost a decade after the 9/11 tragedy. The box office performance of New York could be a pointer to how well the subject will be received.

A look at Rani Mukherjee's role in Dil Bole Hadippa

Yes, this is Rani Mukerji. As she will be seen in the Yash Raj film Dil Bole Hadippa. The actress essays the role of a Sikh boy from a small village, in this full-on entertainer based in Punjab. The look of the film has been done by Manish Malhotra while Rani's sardar look has been done by Mike Stringer from UK, who styled the Dhoom 2 look.

The film, directed by Anurag Singh, stars Shahid Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Rakhi Sawant and Sherlyn Chopra. The film is said to be inspired by She's The Man, smainlining Amanda Bynes.

What it's about

The film was earlier titled Hadippa but Sanjay Leela Bhansali had the rights to the title for the last three years. YRF was unable to convince Bhansali to part with the title, which led them to rename the film, Dil Bole Hadippa.

The film is slated to release on September 18.

Fardeen Khan taking guitar lessons for All the Best

Mumbai: Is learning to play the guitar for his role in Ajay Devgan's All The Best The Fun Begins in Goa

Teacher hired

Fardeen's character Veer is part of a band. Director Rohit Shetty says, "Veer is a guitarist and Fardeen wanted the character to look realistic. So, we hired Subi from Mumbai to come on the set and train him." Subi is one of the lead guitarists of a rock band.

The director continues, "Subi has been with us for the last 50 days. Fardeen is a very sincere actor who works hard on all his scenes. Though he didn't have to learn, he insisted on picking up the basics, so we decided to hire a trainer."

Fardeen trains for almost an hour every alternate day and now can play the guitar quite well. The actor admits, "I am enjoying learning to play the guitar. I had learnt it when I was a child like all children take various creative lessons. But by the time I grew up I had forgotten it all. It's been great fun getting back to it. Though I can't play a full song, at least I can strum some basic stuff and maybe a tune or two."

FK even sports a stick-on tattoo of a guitar on his left hand, "I had been wanting to have a real one soon but couldn't decide on the design. Now I have finalised one but I plan to get my tattoo done in Mumbai."

Sanjay Dutt performs risky stunt for his movie Luck

Performs stunt, where hes ejects from a speeding train

Sanjay Dutt has performed a stunning action sequence for Shree Ashtavinayak's Luck. He jumped from a speeding train, blindfolded and with his hands tied behind his back without any cables or dummies.

Expensive highlight

Soham Shah, the director of Luck, says Dutt's sequence is one of the biggest and the most expensive highlights of the film, "It's Sanju's introductory sequence. He jumps, along with other actors, from a running train, blindfolded with his hands tied behind his back."

Says Soham, "It's about these characters testing their luck. We set up cables and kept harnesses ready. So, if anything went wrong Sanju would be not be injured. But when we narrated the scene to him, he said he didn't want to use any safety measures or dummies. He was kicked about shooting such a high-voltage action scene on his own." Action director Allan Amin led the action team.

Soham adds, "The train sequence with five running trains was technically impossible to set up in Mumbai or any other big city, so we shot in Goa. The authorities helped us change guards and some trains were kept on standby for a couple of days on two railway tracks. It was a very expensive shoot. A five-day shoot with five trains a day cost us over Rs 1.5 crore."

Split-second reaction

Adds Dutt, "I hadn't shot such a hard-core action sequence in a long time, so when the opportunity arose, I decided to do it myself. Initially, I was a bit nervous but then I gauged the jump from the cage in the train to the tracks. After the jump, we had to speed away from the train, and keep running. For that split second, I had my heart in my mouth but fortunately, things went well."

Luck also stars Shruti Hassan, Mithun Chakroborty and Imran Khan among others.

Emraan's 'Tum Mile' is waiting for the Mumbai monsoon

Emraan Hashmi's Tum Mile is stuck not because of date problems, but due to the delayed rains here. Ironically, the romantic movie is about a couple stuck in the 2005 Mumbai deluge and the makers are waiting for the skies to open up.

"None of us have a date excuse this time around. We are willing to shoot for the film but just can't do that," joked Emraan, "Thankfully, this time around the culprit is none other than the rain god himself."

Producer Mukesh Bhatt doesn't have much to worry though as director Kunal Deshmukh has almost completed the entire film in a specially designed set that recreates the flood scene of July 26, 2005. The film is gearing up for its final copy.

"But then we don't want to rush up things. We want the final copy to look exactly like a final copy. And for that, these shots (real rain shots) form an integral part. While a couple of them would require both me and Soha (Ali Khan) being trapped in rain, a few only need the Mumbai city in background," Emraan said.

When a huge portion of the film has already been shot on the sets, why not shoot the aforementioned scenes in artificial rains?

"Kunal (Deshmukh) is very particular about these scenes especially and is quite positive that actual rains will only elevate the proceedings. Since these are meant to be outdoor shots, it would look fake if we shoot with artificial rain," said Emraan.

"In fact, we were not anticipating such a situation because generally the rains do arrive in Mumbai around this time. We are sitting ready with our cast, crew and equipment. It's just a matter of a few days and we are willing to wait," he added.

'Tum Mile' was originally slated for release in June-July to coincide with the Mumbai floods anniversary. However, due to the producers' strike, the release timelines have now shifted to September 25.

"Whatever happens indeed happens for good. Since there are so many releases waiting in queue, we have to anyway wait for a while before we hit the screens. Jashn is also releasing this July.

"Meanwhile, we continue to pray and hope that we can finish our job, complete the film and be ready for September release," said Emraan.

Starring Soha Ali Khan in female lead, Tum Mile has music by Pritam.

Aarya Babbar refuses item song, cause he won't unbutton

Mumbai: John Abraham bared his butt for Dostana, Hrithik Roshan danced without his shirt in Dhoom 2, Shah Rukh flashed his abs for a song in Om Shanti Om but Aarya Babbar won't unbutton, and that's that.

There's no arguing about that. Recently, Aarya was offered a song in Prakash Jha's next production but he flatly refused once he understood that they wanted him to 'expose'.

Can't bare it

A source in the industry reveals, "Prakash Jha is all set to start his next home production, which will be directed by his niece Alankrita Shrivastava. Babbar Jr was approached for the part but he said an emphatic 'NO'" The film is a chick flick titled Turning 30 and stars Gul Panag in the lead role.

Alankrita, who has penned the script herself, approached the Babbar boy for an item number. After hearing out the first time writer-director, Aarya flatly refused the part citing his family "especially his father" as the reason for not going bare.

Aarya says, "I don't have a problem in exposing but the idea of stripping doesn't appeal to me right now."
Farah Khan Shah Rukh Khan's closest friend will soon be seen on his arch enemy Salman Khan's show 10 Ka Dum alongwith her Om Shanti Om leading lady Deepika Padukone.

Farah has always drawn a very clear line between her friends and her work. She doesn't let one aspect affect the other.

Don't think Sallu knows

After choreographing a song on Sallu's home production Main Aur Mrs Khanna, on Monday, she shot for an episode of 10 Ka Dum. Farah confirms, "Yes, I am appearing on DKD. The channel people asked me as I am already judging their show, Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega.

I was earlier supposed to go with Sajid Khan or my husband Shirish (Kunder) and Deepika was to come with Saif to promote Love Aaj Kal but that didn't work out, so we are going together. I don't think Salman knows I'm coming on the show. He'll know when I go there."

Farah is appearing on the show for a cause, "I hope to win a certain amount of money. I am a member of the board of trustees of the NGO Sneha.

They work for the education of slum children, empowerment of women living in slums, teach them about health, making them self-reliant in the process, through various self-employment techniques."

Fund-raiser

She adds, "I learnt about it from a school friend. Sneha is being run by a doctor who gave up her job in Sion Hospital to work for the women and children. If I win Rs 10 to 50 lakh, it will be great as they need to survive. I'm in charge of fund-raising and creating awareness for the NGO."

All seems to be well between Deepika and Farah now. Last year, she was upset with Deepika for not keeping in touch after OSO. Says Farah, "Deepika's a sweet girl and we have been bonding a lot over the last year. In fact, Ranbir and Deepika have come to my home a number of times." All's well that ends well.

Salman Khan donates saris to poor women working in Film City

Mumbai: Recently on his show 10 Ka Dum, Salman Khan said, "mujhe sari pehenna nahin aata hai, sirf nikalna aata hai. But he recently bought saris for group of women.

The actor, who is known for his generosity, was approached by some sweeper women during the shooting of Wanted and they asked him to buy saris for all the women working there!

What's the occasion?

Says a source present on the sets, "Salmanbhai was sitting in front of his van chatting with friends at Film City when a couple of sweeper women came up to him and started talking to him. They started demanding new saris from him. He joked and said it wasn't Diwali or Eid so there was no reason for him to buy saris for them. But they started crying and pleading with him."

A history of generosity

The actor then asked the group how many women were working in Film City. They said, about 35. He called his spot boy, gave him a wad of cash from his pocket and asked him to take his car and go out and buy saris for all the women. His boy came back with bundle of saris and distributed them to the thrilled women."

Boney Kapoor, the producer of Wanted, admits, "Yes it's true, Salman bought new saris for all the women working in Film City. He asked his Man Friday to buy them and then distributed it to the women who had collected there.

Apparently, he had given saris to some women earlier. This time they asked him to gift them. I was there when this happened. Earlier, he bought cycles for 15 children belonging to the workers in Film City, when they asked him to."

Hero to the young and old

Boney says Salman always spends money on the needy. He recalls, "Once while shooting at Bandra Fort (where he has spent his childhood), I saw him giving away thousands of rupees to some men whom he must have interacted with, while growing up. They had fallen on bad times and approached him for help.

He spent time enquiring about their children. In Hyderabad too, when some poor children met him during Diwali he bought fireworks and distributed it among them. The children were so happy it brought tears to all our eyes," concludes Kapoor emotionally.

Kareena Kapoor's special diet keeps her healthy in Ladakh

Ladakh: Kareena Kapoor is shooting at Pangong Lake (the world's highest lake at 14,256 feet above sea level) in Kashmir for Raj Kumar Hirani's 3 Idiots.

While the rest of the unit members have been feeling dizzy and weak because of low oxygen (due to high altitude), Bebo is fighting fit thanks to her special diet.

Diet does it
The actress has been eating according to a diet prepared by her nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar. Kareena says, "It's tough working in extreme climactic conditions. Fortun- ately, I am surviving because of my yoga and diet, which I change according to the climate of the area where I shoot." Last year, the schedule had got cancelled because of bad weather.

Not-so-secret recipe
Rujuta reveals her star client's secret recipe of looking great and feeling fit, "I had given her a diet rich in carbohydrates as Pangong and Ladakh are low in oxygen. Carbs give oxygen and allow her body to burn fat. Also the shooting is hectic, so she needs her calories.

Kareena is eating the local staple diet of the Ladakhis Thukpa (noodle soup), goat cheese, momos, and Leh berries (made from the juice of seabuckthorn, which are rich anti-oxidants and good fat burners."

The actress also has lots of Ladakhi butter tea which keeps you from getting dehydrated.

Priyanka and Shahid switch from Facebook to Twitter

Mumbai: No more Facebook junkies, PC and Shasha have taken to another social networking site, Twitter

Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor used to be regulars on Facebook. But after their private conversations became public, they switched to Twitter.

The big switch

PC and Shahid used to write regularly on each other's Facebook walls. They'd even comment on each other's status messages. And had cutesy names for each other. However, once they realised that it was not as private as they'd expected, they switched to Twitter.

Unlike Facebook, it was Shahid who introduced Twitter to Priyanka. He suggested that she get a Twitter account to be in touch with her international fans, and also to promote their movie Kaminey. Shahid has been on Twitter since last year, it's only since April this year, that he has started tweeting regularly.

Keeping it private

Kapoor was overheard telling Priyanka how fast and efficient Twitter is, compared to Facebook. After that PC explored the website and has been tweeting since. A source reveals, "Shahid and Priyanka's main reason for being on Twitter is to promote their movie. However, they also keep sending direct messages which can't be seen by those who visit their pages."

Both of them have made various posts about not wanting the release date of Kaminey to be pushed any further. PC's post on her page reads, "Hoping the Kaminey release is finalised for August 14, I can't wait for the response", while Shahid says, "BTW, Kaminey tentative release date is 14th Aug." In response to Shahid's tweet, Priyanka replied by sending him a public message saying, "Let's hope it's final this time."

FACT
Since PC has recently joined the online community, she has around 10 members following her, while Shahid, on the other hand, has around 3042!

The secret behind Saif's younger look

Saif's got a new, smoother look. Just see the pictures to spot the differences!

It is learnt that the 38-year-old actor got the work done while in London recently, for the promotion of Love Aaj Kal.

Hiding behind shades
A source close to the actor reveals, "Saif was wearing shades to a lot of events just after he got the job done. This was to hide the tell-tale signs. Now that the after-effects have worn out, he steps out in day light without the shades."

What are fillers?
Facial fillers, also known as "dermal fillers" and "injectables," are temporary to long-lasting solutions administered through a few tiny injections on specific areas of the face.

What is botox?
Botox is a protein derived from the botulism toxin that is injected underneath skin in order to minimise or smooth out lines and wrinkles on the face. The shot paralyses or relaxes facial muscles, giving the recipient a clean, smooth appearance. It is a non-invasive procedure and the results are immediate. Botox shots are used to get rid of frown lines and crow's feet.

Priyanka comes to Mugdha Godse rescue on a bad hair day

Mumbai: Bad hair days are a star's worst nightmare. And when Mugdha Godse had to encounter one recently, it was, unexpectedly, Fashion co-star Priyanka Chopra who came to her rescue!

Come on over

It is learnt that Mugdha was in a fix before the recently held film awards show due to a goof-up from the organisers' end. The model-turned-actress was left wondering how she would step out of the hotel room for the big night. Her assigned hairstylist just didn't turn up....

Not knowing what to do, Mugdha called up PC to bail her out at the spur of the moment! Chopra readily agreed to help her and told her to come over to her room even though she was getting ready for the event.

Says a source, "Mugdha has no qualms about turning to Priyanka, who was the big star of Fashion and received all the accolades. There are no ego issues here. She has still kept in touch with her and respects her friendship.
When it came to a crisis, all that Mugdha had to do was dial PC to find a way out of the mess."

Hairstylist Mehera who was attending to PC styled Mugdha's coiffure as well. As there was not much time on hand, she suggested Mugdha keep her hair loose with a simple twist that could go well with her gown.

Mugdha's spokesperson confirms, "The incident did occur and luckily for her Priyanka Chopra came to her rescue."

Shiney was not under the influence of alcohol: Medical reports

Medical reports of actor Shiney Ahuja, arrested for allegedly raping his 20-year-old domestic help, have suggested that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of incident, police said.

"The blood and urine samples have shown that the actor was neither under the influence of alcohol nor drugs. He was in his complete sense when he allegedly raped the maid. We are awaiting the DNA reports," Assistant Police Commissioner Dilip Suryawanshi said.

The blood and urine samples of the actor were sent to Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory for tests. Nail samples of the victim have also been sent for forensic tests to gather corroborative evidence in the case, police said.

Earlier, medical reports of the actor showed an abrasion on his right hand with no other injury on his body.

Ahuja, who is in judicial custody till July 2, was arrested on June 15 after her domestic help accused him of raping her at his suburban Oshiwara residence.

Milind gets talking about his relationship with Shahana Goswami

Milind Soman and Shahana Goswami, who have been dating for sometime now, are now are open about their romance.

At a recently concluded international awards event, they were seen giving interviews together holding hands and behaving like new lovers do. Word is, they are ready to take their relationship to the next level and that Shahana will be shifting in with Milind shortly.

More intense relationship

Milind, who is recently separated from his French wife says, "It's true that Shahana and I are in love and are dating each other but we aren't moving in together. We've known each other for the last six years but it's only in the last five months that we have come closer and started enjoying each other's company more. Today, our relationship is deeper and more intense."

A source close to the couple says that they are a committed couple and wedding bells could ring for them by this year-end. There is no question of waiting for a divorce to come through as his previous marriage to French actress Mylene Jampanoi wasn't registered either in India or France.

Milind reveals that the separation with Mylene was very amicable, "I am sure that if Mylene knew about my relationship with Shahana today, she would be very supportive about it." Even so, they are not ready to get married just yet. While Milind casually brushes it off with a "Not right now" Shahana is more vocal. She says, "No chance right now! I am only 23."

Shahana takes pains to stress that they are not living together, "I am in a committed relationship and though we both love each other I am not living together with Milind. I am staying at my rented Juhu apartment and quite happy to be there."

Shahid Kapur has shed his shirt for a scene in Vishal Bhardwaj's Kaminey

Shahid says when Vishal told him that he had to bare his body, he was game, "Vishal let me determine the physique of the character and how it was to be presented.

Charlie's tough, lean physique emanates a vibe true to his character, which is completely differentiates him from Guddu, the other twin that I play. So there wasn't any hesitation on my part."

Like two different people

Shahid and Vishal shared notes on his look and character in the film, "The challenge was to be able to go from one role to another seamlessly without any time wastage, as we did not have the luxury of shooting each character separately.

There were times when I had to shoot for both the characters on the same day. I was so into it that at times, after wraps, I actually felt like I were two different people."

It took Shahid nearly eight months to get a whipcord body for the film. He trained five days a week and two hours a day. He recalls, "Charlie was not about to have a chiselled, picture perfect body. Vishal's visualised a distinct look for the character but left it to me to decide what his exact physique.

I envisioned Charlie as a tough street fighter. He needed to look tough and strong rather than sport a gym toned look. It's a lean and mean but not clean look, the grunge adds to the dark portrayal of the character."

Shahid's trainer Abbas Ali sheds light...
...On his workout regime:

Trainer Abbas Ali, says, "It took us eight months of advanced training to get this look. Our focus was on form, speed and power. For a running shot in Kaminey where Shahid had to run topless, my aim was to make him look like a sprinter, not an actor."
On his diet:
Abbas says, "Being a vegetarian posed a challenge in the way of building the physique that Shahid wanted. We followed a diet of high carbs, moderate proteins and moderate good fats We removed maida from his diet and gave him muesli, oats, and protein shakes. He was not allowed any sugar and oil. He had to eat at the right time and in right combinations."

Neil's 'reality check' in New York

Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh was detained at an airport in the US for over an hour because the immigration officials refused to believe that he was an Indian.

Neil said that the incident happened earlier this year when he arrived in New York to shoot for Kabir Khan's film New York which has a backdrop of 9/11 terror attacks.

"I can pass off as a Britisher, American, Kashmiri easily because my skin tone and complexion can blend anywhere. But this incident changed my attitude of how I will approach my role in New York which also dwells upon discrimination," Neil, grandson of legendary playback singer Mukesh, said.

The film is about three friends, played by John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Katrina Kaif and how their lives change forever after the terror attacks. Neil recalled asking the official if his accent was not proof enough that he was an Indian national.

"I told him to google search my name. When he realised his folly, he was still not willing to let me go and started asking questions about my profession like what kind of films I do and why am I in New York," the actor said.

The young actor said that while leaving the immigration office finally, he thanked the official because he had found the crux of what New York is all about.

Neil described New York as an intelligently made film which will pick up at the box office through the word of mouth. "Too much of publicity heightens the level of expectations and some times proves detrimental to the film's interests. We are very confident of our product," he said.

Talking about New York, Neil said the 9/11 terror attacks had affected everybody especially the youth and shook the entire world.

"In the film, there are three young friends from India studying in an American university campus and the incident affects their friendship," he said. Declining to give more details, Neil said, "The friendship is affected in a certain way. Whether in a good or bad way is the question and the crux of the film."

Neil said co-stars Katrina Kaif and John Abraham are great human beings. "Off screen they are good friends and their chemistry shows on screen," he said. Neil did not know Katrina earlier and said he was skeptical to work with her initially.

"But I found her to be very down to earth. New York is her best performance to date," the actor said. When asked if the film was a love triangle, Neil said there was an element of love. But the bond of friendship is more important.

"Unfortunately, in our society, we are unable to accept that a girl and boy can be the best of buddies," he said.

To a question about whom Katrina is paired opposite in the film, the actor said, "She is paired opposite both of us. Katrina's character is torn between me and John."

The actor, who is a self-confessed fan of Salman Khan, said that he met Salman Khan for the first time on the sets of Dus ka Dum 2 where he and Katrina promoted New York.

"I was very nervous because I am a fan of Salmanbhai. But, he made me feel very comfortable. He gave lot of gifts for me and my brother including T-shirts of Being Human, his charity and a watch for my father," the young actor said.

Neil, who started his bollywood career with crime-thriller Johnny Gaddar said that his 'adventurous' nature made him decide to become an actor.

"It is the reason that I wanted to become an actor. I want to know what's happening around the world and being an actor gives me that privilege of exploring the changes. Films are fictitious only to a certain extent. You can't fake everything," he said.

"In New York, I got to live a life of a campus student in a foreign university and was shocked to see that discrimination does exist. I have student friends in Australia who tell me that they are very scared after the recent incidents of violence against Indian students," Neil added.

Sanjay Dutt's inking spree continues - now it's on the neck

Sanjay Dutt has had yet another tattoo done. This time, it's on his neck. The actor last got inked on Wednesday in Goa on the sets of Ajay Devgan's All The Best.

Gimme more!

According to a unit source, "Sanju was very happy with the tattos of his parents' names (Nargis and Sunil Dutt) which Vishwas Dorwekar of Hakim Aalim's saloon had done recently. So he asked him to fly down again for another." The latest tattoo is a four-inch Tibetan Om with Dutt's Leo zodiac sign and his lucky number 1 below it.

Confirms Dutt, "Yes I have got a tattoo of the Tibetan Om but I wouldn't like to talk about it."

The Tibetan Om symbolises the first frequency that created the universe. It is learnt that the tattoo took an hour to do. It extends from his hairline to the shoulder blade.

On his tattoo agenda is an elaborate, intricate tattoo on his existing lion's tattoo, that has faded. It'll take 12 hours to create.

German model visits Hanuman temple for film's success

German supermodel-turned-actress Claudia Ciesla, who was rumoured to be dating Bollywood star Salman Khan, recently visited the Hanuman temple here to pray for the success of her film Karma: Crime, Passion, Reincarnation.

The film about reincarnation that released all over India June 12 is a dramatic thriller about an Austrian girl (Claudia) who is raped and murdered during her visit to India in the 1970s and how she is reborn and comes back to the same place after 30 years.

The 22-year-old was in the capital to promote the film, which is directed MR Shahjahan. Apart from praying and promoting her movie, Claudia also spoke of the rumours linking her to Salman.

She rubbished reports in a leading daily that had reported that she was Salman's new muse and the reason behind the Salman-Katrina split saying: "Salman and I are just good friends. He is not my boyfriend, as has been reported here. Everyone knows that it's Katrina Kaif who is his girlfriend and not me. I haven't even been that long in India to start controversies."

Deepika Pdukone goes Saif way!

That Saif has tattooed his girl friend Karrena’s name on his hand has become a great news earlier this year and Saif has created a trend among youth with this act of his. Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone is one among the many people who followed Saif.

Though not confirmed, it has been rumored that Deepika has tattooed her boy friend Ranbir Kapoor’s name - not on hand like Saif but on her neck. It is also reported that she did not tattoo the entire name, but just the letters RK. Unfortunately the location of the tattoo is such that no one can observe it, nor can she flaunt it. Probably she wanted to hide this.

Unlike many other relations in Bollywood this one is not a secret. In fact, Deepika has openly said in an interview that she is in love with Ranbir and would love to do a romantic flick with her biy friend. Her upcoming film, Bachnna Ae Haseeno is with RK. However, she is just one among three heroines in this movie, the other two being Bipasha and Manissa.

John Abraham studied Quran for 'New York' role

Not knowing a single word of the Quran, Bollywood hero John Abraham, a Parsi, studied the holy book in a translation to prepare himself to play an NRI Muslim in Kabir Khan's New York.

"It's part of my larger determination to prepare myself completely for a part. Whether it was New York or now Abbas Tyrewala's film, I'm taking time off to prepare for the film and the character. The audience today understands an honest film. That's what I want to give," Abraham said.

Earlier John learnt to play the flute, the Sanskrit language and how to wear a dhoti to give his character, Narayan, conviction in Oscar-nominated Water, a film about the plight of widows in pre-Independence India.

"I only want to do roles that take me out of my comfort zone. Through my characters and performances, I want to make people comfortable with what makes me uncomfortable as a human being and an Indian," said Abraham, who believes that an actor has to breakthrough his own stereotypes.

He tried to break his image by doing films like Water, No Smoking and Kabul Express.

Says one of Abraham's close friends of New York: "He went very deep into the film's theme of Islamic isolation. When he shot Kabul Express with Kabir Khan in Afghanistan, John spoke to people....and began to understand the concept of jehad. He understood how dangerous it is to fight for a cause without knowing the history of that cause.

"He went on the net, found legitimate and proper translations of the Quran. He learnt the proper pronunciations of words in the Quran," the friend said.

In New York, Abraham plays a character, who is wrongly detained in the US for terrorism.

"John researched rigorously on Islam and its various aspects. His character in New York is wrongly detained for terrorism. John based his character on three such real-life Muslims taken into custody in the US for wrongs they hadn't committed.

"John and Kabir Khan amalgamated the cases of three such unfortunate people to create John's character. He actually lived, breathed, slept and wept like someone who had been wrongly ostracised," said the friend.

So traumatised was the actor by the experience that he went into a complete shell in Philadelphia, where New York was shot.

"He wouldn't talk to people. He was completely in his own shell. It was a life-changing experience. Today, John knows what it feels to be a Muslim and a target of ceaseless suspicion and hostility in the US.

"He also empathises closely with the issue of Indian students being racially abused in Australia after playing an Indian abused in New York. He understands the isolation of the minority. To a large extent, John has been a part of a minority from his birth," said the friend.

Releasing June 26, the film also stars Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan.

Amrita Rao's raring to go... a year older

Amrita Rao turned a year older yesterday (June 17). The actress had a quiet birthday that began with a visit to the temple followed by spending time at home with family.

Later in the day, some of her starry friends dropped in to wish her. With a hot sizzling look in her next flick Shortkut, the actress is raring to go.

Katrina and Neil make appreance on Salman show Dus Ka Dum to promote New York

Salman Khan appears in a jolly good mood on 10 Ka Dum's latest episode, with Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh making an appearance. When a young woman in the audience comes up with a request, he quickly asks: "Are you asking for your money back for Yuvvraaj?" She requests Salman to do a waltz with Katrina on the show
a la Yuvvraaj.

The two gladly oblige but not before Salman comes up with, "Subhash Ghai has now edited the film and reduced the running time, so please will someone go and see the film now?"

The audience cracked up at all his one-liners. But don't they always? Why can't someone ask him something uncomfortable and rile him up? Now airing that would be entertainment!

Deepika Padukone to feature in opening track in Telugu film

After her item song with SRK in Billu, Deepika Padukone is preparing for another item song in a South film. Titled Love 4ever, the Telugu film is directed by Jayant.

The song will appear with the opening credits.

Deepika explains why she agreed to do the song, "I heard the song and really liked the concept. The film doesn't have big stars but two newcomers, and I agreed to be a part of the film for their sake.

Not so long ago, I was in the same position a newcomer getting ready to face my audience. And if I can add to this film in some way, then why not?"

Yet again

The song is being choreographed by Ahmed Khan and will be shot at a Hyderabad studio. Deepika adds, "I have worked with Ahmed for Bachna Ae Haseeno's Khuda Jaane track, where he did a brilliant job. This will be the second time we are coming together." But she still hasn't figured out the look for the song."

She takes pain to stress that her appearance should not be treated like an 'item song', "It's a situational song and takes the story ahead. The film opens with it. So obviously, it leads to the plot starting where the song ends. I am a South Indian and I think this is a great opportunity for me to connect to my fanbase there," concludes the Bangalore girl.

Shilpa says, "I was in shock when Raj gave me such a beautiful birthday gift. The way he arranged my birthday party was overwhelming too. Raj went out of his way to make it so special for me. He took all the names of my friends in London from my phonebook and invited them for the party. For a man to put together such a party takes time and effort. His gesture was special and thoughtful."

Salman Khan buys a yacht along with his brothers

Don't be surprised if you see the Khan brothers Salman, Sohail and Arbaaz partying on a private yacht in Alibaug. Sources reveal that Salman has bought a yacht, and it is parked at a private stretch of the beach in Alibaug.

A source reveals, "Sohail came up with the idea of buying a yacht because he loves the ocean and swimming. Salman and Arbaaz supported him and decided they get one. Ajay Devgan advises Mugdha Godse to wear a stone amulet

Ajay Devgan has had Mugdha Godse 'stoned'. The model-turned-actress is currently shooting in Goa for his film All The Best. Nursing a road accident injury that causes pain in the back and neck, Mugdha has started wearing a stone amulet on her arm like Devgan.

It is learnt that the actor-producer suggested B-Town's stone specialist Dr Dilip Kumar to the newbie.
Says a unit source, "The doctor has been spotted on the sets in Goa. He's been advising her not only about the right stones to wear but has also been providing her acupressure treatment. The Fashion actress began wearing the amulet some days ago."

For relief from pain

Mugdha met with an accident on the Mumbai-Pune expressway on May 5. She says, "Due to the impact, I still experience pain and discomfort. I was told to consult Dr Dilip Kumar for relief from pain. Initially, I did acupressure therapy and now I have begun wearing the amulet."

She adds, "Whenever I wear it, there is relief. In fact, as soon as I remove it, there is a distinct discomfort. Stone therapy is a science, several people wear rings with different stones, so why not an amulet made of stones?"

In fact, director Rohit Shetty has included the amulet as part of her All The Best character's accessories. "So that I don't have to remove it. My persona is quite colourful in the film and it gels with it. Only if the scene demands, I remove it and keep it my pocket for those moments."

Mugdha, who also features in Madhur Bhandarkar's Jail, feels that as the amulet looks trendy, it goes well with whatever she wears.

Imran, Ranbir to feature in KJo's next High school Musical style film

Yuppie romance

It is learnt that the film will be in the vein of Hollywood hit High School Musical. Both Imran and Ranbir play their age and it will be a yuppie romantic drama. "After Khan, Karan wants to direct something light. This will be the perfect opportunity."

Adds the source, "Also, Ranbir and Imran have been offered numerous projects opposite each other ('Zoya's double dhamaka'; HiTLIST, May 29) but both have turned most films down. However, when they heard the subject for Karan's musical, they immediately loved it."

Picking the gals

Even though details are not available, the source adds that Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor are the two actresses being considered to play the roles opposite Ranbir and Imran.
